After earning her BFA in Painting at Academia di Belle Arti di Carrara in 2011, Otten moved first to Milan to study photography at Brera Academy, and then to the United States where she refined her interest in alternative and early photographic production methods, such as cyanotype and Van Dyke brown. In 2013, she earned her first Master’s degree in Art. In 2015, she completed her study in photography at Fontbonne University in St. Louis, Missouri, earning her second Master’s in Fine Art. In 2016, Otten began teaching photography at St. Louis Community College. In 2017, she expanded to teaching at Southwestern Illinois College, where she currently teaches Photography, Studio in Photography, Art History, and History of Photography. Otten’s early work is highlighted by her background in painting and Italian Art, pulling from masters from the Baroque and Renaissance periods such as Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Her later work reflects her interests in 1920s and 1930s surrealism, especially the works of Man Ray. Giada Otten is best known for her conceptual portrait photography and her skills on alternative photographic processes expressed in a contemporary language. Since 2008, Otten has owned and operated her own photography studio where she shoots a wide range of photography, from traditional to alternative to experimental. Through her studio, she also offers private lessons in photography, drawing and art history.
